The Volcanic Archipelago

A complex of eight islands, in order of size: Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli, Fillicudi, Allicudi, Panarea and Basiluzzo. The present shape of the Aeolian Islands is the result of volcanic activity over a period of 260,000 years. There are two active volcanoes - Stromboli and Vulcano. The volcanic activity of steaming fumaroles and thermal waters waiting to be tapped are on most of the islands. More than 200'000 people each year come over to this corner of paradise, characterized of traditional houses consisting of modular cubes constructed from indigenous building materials as stone, lava, pumice and tufa, all surrounded by clear blue water and with amazing view facing the mount Etna. The Aeolian Islands are listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites.
