The second largest island of Italy, after Sicily, Sardinia is an authentic gem of the Italian country, more and more a demanded destination for travellers within Italy and abroad. Many people wrote about this enchanting place, astonished by its beauty and its unique charming impact. David Herbert Lawrence for example used to write on his book “Sea and Sardinia”, that “this land does not look like no other place on earth. Sardinia is something else: Enchanting surrounding spaces and distances to travel into, nothing seems to be ending, nothing is definite. It is in fact like freedom.” The famous Italian songwriter Fabrizio de André as well once said, he would suggest the Lord that if he should lead us to paradise, then paradise should be a place like Sardinia.
Famous all over the world for its breath taking coastline with emerald green water, its Jet-Set guests and its rich and profound culture, Sardinia offers a wide range of activities all around the traveller and its welfare. In the 1950's and 1960's tourism emerged as a result of the well preserved nature, amazing sandy and rocky beaches, emerald clear waters, hidden grottoes and breathtaking islands, combined with a technological and infrastructural development, making the island attractive to many travellers. Providing three airports, and several ports as welcoming gates to the island, in Sardinia many facilities rapidly developed such as diving centres, sailing boats companies, guided excursions, and many more, in order to offer a unique package to the traveller made of adventure, relax and natural beauty.
Due to its primary sector, which is still of outstanding importance, Sardinia is famous to for its unique gastronomy, influenced all over the centuries by Roman, Catalan, Arab and Genovese culture, passed over to nowadays' generation. In Sardinia farmers produce the world-famous so-called “Pecorino Sardo”, cheese made of sheep milk, elaborated in different ways, from fresh onto older cheese. These cheese sorts are the ideal companions of the local wines, produced in Sardinia for centuries, said to be one of the most ancient wines, especially the Canonau red wine, in the whole Mediterranean Sea.
Sardinia is in fact one of the most ancient lands in Europe, and the local culture were under several European domination, absorbing all sort of habits, customs and philosophies. As a matter of fact, human occupation extends back many thousands of years BC and subsequent waves of invaders, providing a rich historical and cultural treasure trove. Local people are still nowadays regarded as a population with a distinct and strong identity, a result of a unique mixture of culture and tradition. It is witnessed by many folklore events, gastronomy and especially music. Some world famous musicians as Peter Gabriel and Frank Zappa studied and took over this special musical influence into their works.
